Screenshot of Tuta

End-to-end encrypted email and calendar from Hannover, Germany, run by the same small team since 2011 (it was called Tutanota until a 2023 rename). The whole mailbox is encrypted in a way Tuta itself can't read, including the subject lines and your address book, which most other "encrypted" providers leave in the clear.

What's encrypted

  • Emails, including subjects and attachments, with zero-access encryption
  • Contacts and calendar, not just message bodies
  • The search index, built and encrypted locally so the server never sees it
  • New accounts use TutaCrypt, a post-quantum encryption scheme Tuta shipped in 2024, ahead of most of the industry

How it works in practice

Because of that design, Tuta doesn't do standard IMAP or POP. You use its own open-source apps for web, desktop, iOS and Android. Messages to people who aren't on Tuta go out as a password-protected link.

Plans

There's a free tier with 1 GB of storage and one calendar. Paid plans start at a few euros a month and add custom domains, more storage, aliases and extra calendars. There are no ads; Tuta is funded by paying users. As a German company, it's covered by GDPR.
