Mailbox.org

Germany

Privacy-respecting Berlin-based email and office suite.

A Berlin email and office service, run by Heinlein Support, a company with a long background in running mail servers for other people. Mailbox.org launched in 2014 with a privacy-first pitch and, importantly, support for the protocols you already use.

What you get

  • Plain IMAP, POP and SMTP, so Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook or whatever you use just works
  • Office suite built on OX App Suite: calendar, contacts, tasks, documents and cloud storage
  • PGP support, including an in-browser option, plus Mailbox Guard to encrypt your whole mailbox so it's unreadable at rest
  • Custom domains and aliases on the paid plans
  • Spam and virus filtering, two-factor auth, and a video-meeting tool

The setup

Servers are in Germany and run on renewable energy. There are no ads and no tracking; the business is funded entirely by subscriptions. It's paid only: plans start at around €1 a month for the light tier and go up to roughly €9 for the larger ones, with extra storage available as an add-on.

Who it's for

People who want a privacy-respecting mailbox that behaves like normal email: no proprietary app you're locked into, easy migration in and out, a German company under GDPR running it. If you specifically want zero-access encryption as the default, Tuta or Proton goes further; if you want privacy plus full standards support, Mailbox.org is the pick.
