Industry-leading neural machine translation built in Cologne.

European Alternative to:

Screenshot of DeepL

A translation company in Cologne, Germany. DeepL launched its translator in 2017, building on the data and team behind Linguee (2009). For European languages especially, a lot of people find its output reads more naturally than Google Translate. It tends to get tone and idiom closer to right.

What it does

  • Text translation across 30-plus languages, with a free tier and higher limits on Pro
  • Document translation that keeps the formatting of Word, PowerPoint and PDF files
  • DeepL Write, a separate tool for rephrasing sentences and fixing grammar
  • API for building translation into other software
  • Browser extensions and desktop apps

Privacy and compliance

DeepL is GDPR-compliant and ISO 27001 certified. On Pro plans it doesn't keep the texts you submit; the free version is more limited on that front, so don't paste anything confidential into it.

In short

It's the European answer to Google Translate, and for a lot of language pairs it's simply better. Pro is worth it if you translate often or need the privacy guarantees; the free tier is fine for the occasional paragraph.
