Mistral AI is a Paris-based AI lab founded in 2023 by ex-Meta and ex-Google DeepMind researchers. It develops open-weight large language models that compete with the leading US labs on quality, while remaining transparent and self-hostable.
The company offers both an API and a chat assistant called Le Chat, plus on-prem deployment for regulated industries. All training and inference is run inside Europe.
Mistral is one of the few credible European answers to OpenAI and Anthropic, and it has become a default choice for EU companies that want frontier AI without sending data to the US.
