TomTom is a Dutch company founded in 1991 and headquartered in Amsterdam. It started as a maker of standalone GPS navigation devices and has since shifted its focus toward digital maps, real-time traffic data, and location APIs for businesses and developers.

The company runs its own map platform, built from its own data rather than licensed from third parties. This independence is what sets it apart from many competitors. Developers can access routing, geocoding, traffic, and map display through TomTom's APIs, and several major automotive manufacturers use TomTom maps in their in-car navigation systems.

The free tier of the developer API covers a reasonable number of calls per day, making it accessible for smaller projects. Paid plans scale up for commercial use. TomTom also sells consumer navigation apps, though the hardware device business is much smaller than it was in the mid-2000s when the company was a dominant player in portable GPS.
