Penpot
Spain
Open-source design and prototyping tool built on web standards, made in Spain as a real Figma alternative.
European Alternative to:

An open-source design and prototyping tool from Kaleidos, a Spanish company best known previously for Taiga. Penpot was built from the start to be SVG-native and self-hostable, two things that the dominant design tool isn't.
What you get
- Vector design, layout, components and shared design systems
- Real-time collaboration in the browser, no native client needed
- A prototyping mode with interactions, transitions and overlays
- CSS Flex and Grid layout built into the canvas, so the design and the code converge
- An on-premise Docker deployment if you don't want to use the hosted version
Where it sits
Penpot's hosted instance runs in the EU, the source is on GitHub under the MPL-2.0 licence, and the company behind it is in Spain. Self-hosting is a first-class scenario rather than a Plan B, which matters for organisations that need design files to stay inside their own network.
Honestly
Penpot has caught up fast but doesn't have Figma's plugin ecosystem yet, and some of the polish around micro-interactions is still maturing. If you want a credible alternative that's open source, runs on your servers, and doesn't go away when the next acquisition happens, Penpot is the obvious choice.
