OsmAnd is a maps and navigation app developed in the Netherlands, built entirely on OpenStreetMap data. It works offline, storing maps on your device so you can navigate without a data connection. The Android version is open-source under GPLv3.
The free version covers the basics: turn-by-turn navigation, map downloads, and points of interest. A one-time purchase called OsmAnd+ (or a subscription called OsmAnd Pro) unlocks unlimited map downloads, contour lines, Wikipedia POI data, and a few other extras. There are no ads in any version.
What sets it apart from Google Maps is the depth of customization and the offline-first approach. Hikers, cyclists, and sailors use it because you can render specialized map layers, record GPX tracks, and plan routes without any cloud dependency. The tradeoff is a UI that takes some getting used to.
