Scaleway

France

European cloud with bare-metal, GPU and serverless services.

European Alternative to:

Screenshot of Scaleway

A French cloud provider, part of Xavier Niel's Iliad group (the company behind Free, the mobile carrier). Scaleway grew out of Online.net and the Dedibox dedicated-server business, and now offers a fairly broad cloud rather than just servers.

The catalog

  • Compute: cloud VMs, bare-metal servers, and GPU instances for AI and ML work
  • Containers: managed Kubernetes (Kapsule), serverless containers and functions
  • Storage: S3-compatible object storage, block storage, and managed databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis)
  • Networking: load balancers, private networks, public gateways, DNS
  • A web console, CLI and Terraform provider

Where it runs

Data centers in France (Paris), the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and Poland (Warsaw). Scaleway has put real work into the environmental side: its DC5 site near Paris uses adiabatic cooling instead of air conditioning, which cuts its energy use sharply.

Who it's for

EU companies that want a cloud with a wide enough service catalog to actually build on, with data residency in Europe and no exposure to US providers. It's not as vast as AWS, but it covers most of what a normal product needs, and the GPU offering makes it interesting for AI workloads in particular.
