A VPN from Gothenburg, Sweden, run since 2009. The thing that sets Mullvad apart is how little it asks of you: you sign up by generating a random account number. No email, no name, no phone. And you can pay in cash or Monero if you want to.

How it works

  • Account = a random number. Nothing personal is attached to it
  • Flat €5 a month. No annual discount, no five-year deal, no upsells
  • Audited no-logging policy, checked by outside firms more than once, with servers running from RAM rather than disks
  • WireGuard and OpenVPN, multi-hop, port forwarding and a kill switch
  • Payment in cash, bank transfer, card, crypto or Monero

Beyond the VPN

Mullvad also co-developed the Mullvad Browser with the Tor Project. It's a hardened browser meant to be used alongside the VPN. The team has been working on defences against AI-assisted traffic analysis too.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants a no-nonsense VPN from a company that has gone out of its way not to know who its customers are. It won't unlock a Netflix region or hand you a flashy app full of extras. It gives you a fast, private tunnel and not much fuss.
