Cryptomator
Germany
German open-source tool that encrypts your cloud files locally before they ever leave your device.
European Alternative to:

A small, focused tool from Skymatic GmbH in Sankt Augustin, Germany. Cryptomator does one thing: it puts a transparent encryption layer between your files and a cloud sync folder, so Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or Nextcloud only ever see encrypted blobs.
What you get
- A virtual drive on your machine that acts like a normal folder; underneath, files are split and encrypted per-file
- Apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, with the source code on GitHub
- Filename and content encryption, so even folder structure isn't visible to your cloud provider
- Vaults that are just folders of encrypted files, easy to back up, restore or move
- Optional Cryptomator Hub for teams, with key-sharing managed against an existing identity provider
How it's funded
Desktop apps are open-source and free. The mobile apps cost a small one-off fee, and the team Hub product is a paid subscription. That mix has kept Skymatic genuinely independent rather than VC-driven.
Honestly
Cryptomator doesn't sync anything; you bring your own cloud. That's deliberate, and it's why it works alongside whatever storage you already pay for. If you want zero-knowledge cloud storage as a single product, look at something like Tresorit. If you want to keep using your existing Drive or OneDrive but stop trusting them with your file contents, Cryptomator is the cleanest answer in the category.
