Filen

Germany

German end-to-end encrypted cloud storage where even Filen cannot read your files.

European Alternative to:

Screenshot of Filen

A small German cloud storage operation, with the company based in Bad Salzuflen. Filen launched its current product in 2020 and is built around end-to-end encryption by default, with the source for its clients published on GitHub.

What you get

  • File sync, sharing and a chat tool, all end-to-end encrypted
  • Native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, plus web
  • A mounted virtual drive on desktop with selective sync
  • A free tier with 10 GB, plus paid plans and occasional lifetime deals
  • An S3-compatible API on paid plans, so you can point existing tooling at your encrypted bucket

Where it sits

Servers are located in Germany, the company is a German GmbH, and the encryption keys live with you, not with Filen. The platform is built on top of Hetzner infrastructure, so the underlying hardware story is European too.

Honestly

Filen is small. The apps are good but not best-in-class, and you're trusting a young team with your storage. The upside is a fully encrypted, German-jurisdiction drive at a price point that makes the bigger names look expensive. A reasonable pick if you want EU storage without locking into a 10-year lifetime bet on someone else.
